So I thought I’d start a new product series in hopes that it would push me to try new…well… products. Yes, I prefer sticking to what I know but with so many new products hitting the market I thought I may be missing out. Every week I will be trying a few products, testing them for a week and then rating them. I aim to find brown girl friendly products that target specific issues I have with my skin, hair and beauty, that I know other women of colour experience too. In some cases it may just be a cute lippie that works for us browns, that I’d be keen to share. This week I’ve chosen to focus on hair and skincare.
The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution Image: https://theordinary.com
So the low down on my current skin state: Hyperpigmentation on the sides of my face and my chin. Breakouts on my forehead and general oiliness on my T-Zone. I’ve been using this peel for two weeks so far. Just once a week for ten minutes is said to leave you with brighter and more even skin. It exfoliates the skin’s topmost layer so essentially, it’s a peel in a bottle. I’ve seen a significant difference in my skin’s appearance after just two uses. I use it at night and the next morning my skin is plump, firm and super bright. For those of you that don’t know I’ve been using Dermalogica products for the last two years and it has worked out pretty well. I do think I needed to switch up my routine a bit. So the addition of this peel to my routine has given my skin new life! If you have extremely sensitive skin I would caution you to try this on a small patch of skin as it does burn the skin a bit. Peels aren’t for everyone but this one is definitely for me! If you struggle with any of the issues mentioned above, you may want to give this a try.
TRESemmé Expert Selection Keratin Smooth Hair Treatment
So I bleached my hair a few times and it ended up falling out everywhere! How embarrassing being in your mother in-law’s house, leaving behind strands of hair like a Persian cat, right? So I decided to go back to black and treat my damaged hair. I’m still on that journey and this hair mask from TRESemmé is helping a ton! My hair is much smoother. It falls out less because it’s not as knotted so combing is breeze. My hair has a healthy shine to it and its super easy to style. The system includes a shampoo and conditioner as well as an oil. Each product contains Keratin and Marula oil which aids frizz and damaged hair. If I had to choose my standout products from the system it would be the masque and the oil.
Expert Selection Keratin Smooth Hair shine oil
Sleek hair also comes with its problems. After a home blow-dry and some straight iron action, fly aways are almost guaranteed. This oil is pretty charming both in packing and use. I’ve used if for two weeks so far after blow drying my hair. I’ve also used it to keep my baby hairs at bay. It adds a decent amount of shine to your hair without making it super oily. You just need a pea size to cover your locks. Anything more may just leave you with an undesirable greasy look. Focus it from the middle towards the ends of your hair. I haven’t used hairspray since trying out this product. If you’re creating a sleek ponytail or a sophisticated bun, add some of this to your hair to keep your strands in place. It’s a great addition to your hair care routine because it nourishes your hair while aiding your chosen hairstyle.
This is what my hair looks like after using the system: Healthy AF!
That’s all for this week! What are some of the beauty products you’ve been enjoying this month? Let me know in the comments section.
